Chharma — The Golden Berry of the Cold Desert

High above the tree line, where the Spiti river cuts through a stark, sun-scorched cold desert, a thorny wild shrub bears one of the most nutrient-dense fruits on earth. Locals call it Chharma — we know it globally as Sea Buckthorn.

For generations, families across Spiti Valley have foraged and dried these tart, golden-orange berries, using them in teas, chutneys, and home remedies to fight the harsh Himalayan winters. It's a fruit that grows where almost nothing else survives, thriving in poor, rocky soil at altitudes of 10,000+ feet, drawing on nothing but glacial water and high-altitude sun.

At Sutlej Tribe, we're proud to say this is one of our newest sourcing partnerships — we've just begun working directly with Spiti farmers and gathering collectives to bring these berries to your table. After harvesting, the berries are carefully dried and crushed to preserve their natural goodness while making them easy to use in your everyday routine.

Why Sea Buckthorn?

Sea buckthorn isn't just a Himalayan curiosity,  it's often called a "superfruit" for good reason:

  • Vitamin C powerhouse: contains significantly more vitamin C by weight than oranges, supporting immunity through the winter months.
  • Rare Omega blend: one of the very few plant sources containing Omega-3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, prized for skin, heart, and gut health.
  • Rich in antioxidants: carotenoids and flavonoids that help fight oxidative stress.
  • Traditional cold-climate remedy: used in Himalayan and Tibetan folk medicine for centuries to support respiratory health, skin healing, and general winter wellness.

How to Enjoy Your Sea Buckthorn Berries 🍵

A little goes a long way — here are a few simple ways to bring Chharma into your daily routine:

  • Tea: Add 1 teaspoons of berries to a cup. Pour hot (not boiling) water over them. Steep for 8–10 minutes. Strain if preferred. Add honey if desired.
  • Top Breakfast: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon over oats or muesli or millet porridge or dalia. Add nuts, seeds, and a drizzle of honey to balance the berry's natural tartness.
  • Stir into curd or yogurt: Mix 1 teaspoon of crushed berries into a bowl of curd or Greek yogurt. Add honey, chopped almonds or walnuts and seasonal fruits like apple, banana, or pomegranate.
  • Smoothie boost: blend soaked berries into smoothies or juices for a tangy, vitamin-rich kick.

Storage Instructions 🫙

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Keep in an airtight container or resealable pouch after opening to avoid moisture exposure
  • Refrigeration isn't required, but can help extend shelf life in warmer, humid climates
